Double Chin Treatment
A fatty or skin accumulation that opens the cervicomental angle causes significant aesthetic concern in daily life and a real sense of unease. It prevents those affected from having a beautiful chin contour.
Who is it for?
A double chin can have different origins:
- In slim individuals, often associated with a receding and insufficiently projected chin.
- Due to being overweight, with diffuse fatty deposits. The chin and submental area retain fatty tissue for a very long time despite diets, regimens, and daily exercise.
- Due to skin laxity in older individuals, which, if combined with fatty deposits, can cause a very significant imperfection -- a voluminous full throat.
The solution
- In slim individuals, it is a false double chin that can primarily be corrected by advancement genioplasty, which provides proper chin projection and can tighten the submental muscles.
- In cases of skin and muscle laxity of the lower face due to ageing, liposuction is often combined with a cervical or cervico-facial facelift, and possibly a platysmoraphy to tighten the underlying muscles responsible for cervical cords (also called neck bands).
- In cases of submental fat deposits, liposuction allows reduction of the fatty double chin: this is an extremely localised liposuction also called lipomeric. In the case of a purely fatty double chin with good skin elasticity, no additional surgical procedure is needed. The aspirated fat will never return: the procedure is permanent.
Principles of submental liposuction
This procedure is often performed under general anaesthesia for patient comfort, lasting 30 minutes to one hour, as an outpatient procedure with same-day return home. The scar under the chin is virtually insignificant. Usually 3 small incisions are necessary.
The quality of this liposuction depends, as always, on the skin's ability to retract and its elasticity, to optimally redrape the bone contours.
