Umbilicated or Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipple correction, performed by a Specialist Cosmetic Surgeon, is a safe procedure that delivers natural results. Dr Weiss, specialist in cosmetic breast surgery in Paris (Hauts-de-Seine), invites you to discover the answers to the main questions about inverted nipples.

Definition

An essential part of a woman's identity is her bust. It combines sexuality, femininity and maternity.

The nipple is the central part of the nipple-areola complex that projects 4 to 8 mm beyond it (standard average projection).

Nipples have an aesthetic function in breast proportions, and functionally serve for lactation and newborn nutrition.

A breast with a projected nipple is simply more beautiful.

Who is inverted nipple correction for?

Due to an anatomical defect, often congenital, the milk ducts and surrounding tissues (interlobular septa) are too short.

This causes the disappearance of nipple projection and its invagination below the surface of the nipple-areola complex.

Inverted nipples can be a major obstacle to breastfeeding as well as to a woman's sexuality.

Inverted nipples are common, affecting approximately 10 to 15% of women.

The impact of this condition is both functional (difficulty breastfeeding) and psychological (reduced sense of femininity).

Principles of inverted nipple correction

The procedure is performed as outpatient surgery under assisted local anaesthesia, through a small incision at the nipple base. The retracted milk ducts are released from the distal portion of the nipple, and an intracutaneous purse-string suture maintains the nipple in its projected position.

A notable increase in projection without available underlying tissue, or in the case of flat nipples where invaginated tissue does not exist, the procedure becomes nipple reconstruction using various techniques from reconstructive surgery.

Post-operative nipple sensitivity varies from person to person and 100% recovery is not guaranteed.

The effects of inverted nipple correction

The results of inverted nipple correction are long-lasting but the evolution of your breasts will depend on you, your genetic code and your lifestyle.

The psychological and functional benefits are very significant post-operatively: the woman can expose herself at the beach, dress easily, the obstacle in her intimate life is removed.
